When Bert Met Bubbles

Our pet budgie, Bert, has been alone in his cage for a couple of years now.  Though he is very friendly with our dog, Diesel, we thought it was about time to get him a companion of his own kind, and so we did today.

Stacey, our daughter-in-law, found a pet shop, that sells budgies.  The shop was the Jumanji pet shop, which is located at the Kilburn High Street, just by Lloyds Bank, next to Iceland supermarket.

At the back of the shop, is where the animals are.  There were rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and even rats (ugh)  And there were lots of birds.  There was a pair of lavender-coloured love birds, which only had eyes for each other. 🙂

Luckily they have budgies and we had to look for a female one, apparently as we have a male already, he would need a female companion.  Another male would mean cage war.  🙁

Bert did have a female companion when we got him, but sadly Lolly died.  She hurt her wing while trying to fly and never really recovered.

The female budgie we got today which costs £28 was a beautiful blue one.  Bert, thought so too.  As soon as he saw, Bubbles (named after Nathan’s bubble gum), Bert had not stopped preening. In fact, he looked so much better, his plumage is much  brighter, emerald green.  He is so attentive to the new bird.  He was ‘kissing’ her all the time.

The shop assistant at the Jumanji pet shop, advised to return Bubbles within the next 7 days, if she doesn’t get on with Bert.

Fingers crossed, it seems they are getting along just fine.

Jumanji Pet Shop was very clean and all the animals are well looked after.  They had food and water.  A trusted commercial establishment for pets.

Did you know?

According to findings, dog owners are fitter and less prone to depression compared to those who do not have a canine pet.

This is rather bizarre but studies also show that just by looking at photos of cute puppies can increase your productivity at work.

Not only that owning a puppy/dog can enhance your social life too.  I remember a friend who used to ‘borrow’ our cute yorkshire terrier so he can walk her in the park.  Apparently our little yokie was a babe magnet. 🙂

Pets R not Just for X’mas

Pets R not Just for X’mas

During Christmas some of us would buy a puppy as a present for our little ones, partner, parent or friends.  It can be a good idea, especially at Christmas, when we want to spread love and see everyone happy and joyful.

70% of puppies’ major attraction is their cuteness, adorability and companionship but the 30% is something else.  You are actually have to look after your pet.  Feed them, take them for a walk, play with them train them and look after them.

They are not just toys that you can pick up and then put aside when it suits you.  They have needs which sometimes you have to put first before yours.

Puppies also chew and chew anything that they see on the floor.  It may be a book, a pillow, soft toys, the wall, the wallpaper, even furnitures, you name it, they will chew on it.

If you are not a dog lover, you may lose patience even before you take your puppy for his first visit to the vet, which again is costly.

Taking responsibility towards a pet is sometimes hard work, so much so that a few days after Christmas, many puppies/dogs are abandoned.

Many are given to dog homes.

Before buying or getting a pet, think very hard if you are apt to looking after a dog.  Because dogs are not just for Christmas, they can live for many, many, many years.

Above are photos of adorable soft toy puppies which have 100% cuteness.

Something that you can put aside, put in a drawer and forget about until you find them again.

HAPPY 2nd Birthday Diesel

Our Beloved Little Terrier who is a feisty member of the family is two years old today. We remember him as a little pup when we first had him. HAPPY 2nd Birthday Diesel

Like all dogs he has his ways. He dotes over our 5 year old grandson and jumps all over him when they visit, they are a mischievous pair 😉

Sometime he is naughty but cheers us up with his antics. He knows the time in the evening when we take him for his walk and if we are late he comes and sits in front of us while we are watching TV to remind us! Then he will run and pick his lead up and bring it to us 🙂

He is an accomplished escape artist having found a way through our garden fences to explore our neighbours gardens.

Have many more happy Birthdays Dear Diesel 🙂

Man’s Best Friend & Other Animals

Animals have these advantages over man: they never hear the clock strike, they die without any idea of death, they have no theologians to instruct them, their last moments are not disturbed by unwelcome and unpleasant ceremonies, their funerals cost them nothing, and no one starts lawsuits over their wills.
~Voltaire

An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.

It often happens that a man is more humanely related to a cat or dog than to any human being.

Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to.

Terror, the Cat Saved the Day

Terrifying Dog Attack on a Child

This is so scary. The child was seriously under grievous threat from the neighbour’s dog. Thank goodness for the family’s feline called Terror. He saved the day. He chased off the ferocious dog away from the injured child.

Surely the dog should be put down with immediate effect. It was a danger to everyone!

Best Friends

As part of our little family Jean & I have our precious pets.

Over the last year Diesel the dog and Bert the budgie have become best buddies.

When Jean and & are out, or at work, they keep each other company. Both have their own unique character. Bert can be a little stand-offish/aloof with us, sometimes, however, when Diesel gets near his bird-cage, Bert will leap to or climb the bars to meet him. Bert likes to gently pull at some of Diesel’s fur around his face. Diesel allows him too and likes it, he will try to lick Bert. Bert can even mimic Diesel’s whine. 😉

We smile when we see them ‘buddying up’. 🙂

1001: Year of the Horse

As the commencement of the 2014 Chinese Year of the Horse is almost upon us, let us celebrate these beautiful equine creatures by knowing as much as we can about them.

A male horse is called a stallion. (Some men want to be known as stallions… in their dreams! LOL)

A female horse is called a mare.

A new born horse until it is weaned is called a foal.

A young male horse is called a colt until age four and a young female horse is called a filly until age 4 as well.

A dam is a mother horse and a sire is the male parent.

Apparently, horses are a good drinker.  They can drink up to 10 gallons per day.

Horses were first domesticated around 5000 years ago.

Domesticate horses have a life span of around 25 years.

Shortly after a horse is born, it can run.

Horses can only breath through thi

It is estimated that there are 750 million horses in the world.

An interesting fact: On Earth, where wild horses roam, it is the female “mare” that decides where to go and the stallion follows!

Favourite Horsey Song:

Lyrics:
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la la la la la, la la la, la, la x2

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la la la la la, la la la, la, la x2

After nine days I let the horse run free
‘Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it’s life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la la la la la, la la la, la, la…

………………………
There had been horses who became famous in their own rights. Some of these equine are fictional characters that we have grown to love as if they have truly exist.

I have to admit that I am not really a horsey person, but having said that I do love watching dressage during the Olympics. And I also can tell what is a walk, a trot, canter and gallop. LOL Most probably my knowledge of horses came from Barbara Cartland and her many period romances that I used lap like a favourite dinner.

Now having said that let us all get aquianted and reaquianted with the most famous horses of all time. And they have definitely names.

1. Bright Zip
2. Black Beauty
3. Trigger
4. Silver
5. Seabiscuit
6. Mr Ed
7. Thumbelina

Best Buddies: Bert & Diesel

Bert & Diesel playing Photo by PH Morton

We came home yesterday evening after work, and we were about to take Diesel for his first walk, when we noticed that Bert, our Budgie’s food cage door was open! We felt anxious and he was nowhere to be found. His cage is above the sofa where Diesel mainly resides and he jumps up to see Bert. Bert comes to his cage bars to see Diesel and some times play with the fur around Diesels’ nose, gently pulling at it, Diesels likes it 🙂 They have become good buddies, Bert even mimics Diesel’s whine/bark. 🙂

We wonder what they get up to when we are at work during the day. Maybe they talk and philosophise about anything under the sun. 😉 Anyway we were concerned that an escape had been carried out! Also we found two of Bert’s feathers on the floor! We immediately feared the worst that he maybe have become a snack for Diesel! We did not find any other remains but a cloth near the feathers, We thought Diesel had been crafty and cleared anyway any forensic evidence lol.

We put a guilty looking Diesel in the garden so that we could undertake a thorough search. After looking intensively up the wall, down the floor, behind shelves, top and behind cupboards, on top of bookcases, under the table, under the settee and even went to the other sitting room, cloakroom downstairs, all the bedrooms upstairs and even the bathroom. No sign of Bert, not a tweet.

We called and called but the only responder was Diesel wanting to come back in from the garden. As soon as we let Diesel in, he went sniffing under the food cupboard in the kitchen. Lo and behold! Bert, the crafty rascal started tweeting; annoyed that Diesel gave away his hiding place. He was so upset that he gave Peter the hardest peck on his finger.

Anyway, all is well again in our household 🙂

Very sad news.  Bert died yesterday.  Peter and I were so sad but not as lonely as Bubbles, who misses Bert terribly.  Diesel, as lonely as well.

We all miss Bert.

RIP, Bert!
