Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker have bony and veiny hands.  These probably have to do with their fluctuating weight and in Madonna’s case, her over-exercising.

At a certain age, the  hands become naturally drier and liver spots also known as age spots start to appear at the back of the hands.

Look after your hands and it will look after you.  We owe it to our hands that they are properly cared for.  Often we take them for granted; forgetting how versatile they are, that they complete us as human beings. No other species have”hands’ that are wonderfully made and perfectly formed.  😉

There are many secrets to beautiful hands.  Some of these secrets were regimen practised by many previous generations.  Some are old wives tales and yet some are so obvious, it is overlooked.

Hands that Warm the Heart

Here are my favourites:

1. Wearing of rubber gloves to do the housework, especially washing up, scrubbing surfaces, polishing using the hand, etc.

2. Have some oatmeals at the ready.  Once or twice a day, your hands should be rubbed with oatmeals.  It will whiten the hands as well as make them soft and flexible.

3. Roughened hands can be made softer by rubbing then with almond oil or olive oil before going to bed.

4. To moisturise the hands, generously apply a good moisturising cream in bed, wear glove overnight.  The next morning, the hands will be soft, smooth and moisturised.

5. The length and shape of the nails  should exactly correspond with the tips of the fingers.

6. Biting the nails should be avoided as a dirty and disagreeable habit, and one utterly destructive to their beauty, strength, and usefulness.

7. To remove stains and discolorations of the nails, a little lemon juice or vinegar and water is the best application.

8. The skin, as a rule, should never be cut, pared, picked or torn off, as is commonly done, and the less it is meddled with, otherwise than in the way just mentioned, the better.

Strawberry Foot Scrub Recipe

As it is summer, strawberries are not at their dearest.  So why not pamper yourself and your feet with strawberries and luxuriate in their opulence.  Afterall, the feet work very hard to support us all day.  They are often neglected but I think, they need tender loving care now and again.

And a good start is a foot scrub.

Below is an easy recipe for a foot scrub.

Strawberry Foot Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

8-10 ripe strawberries

2 tbsp olive oil

3 tbsp sea salt

Method of preparation:

Mashed the strawberries with the olive oil.

Stir in the sea salt.  Mix thoroughly.

Application:

Apply the scrub to your feet.  Massage to the areas which are particularly rough such as the heels and the ball of the feet. Work it.  Expoliate.  Indulge those feet.

Wash the feet and then dry.

Do not forget to apply foot cream for a thorough pampering.

From the age of 30, we start to see visible changes to the skin.  At this time a good skin regimen should now be in place.  Gone are the days that you leave your make up on to go to bed, when too tired to do the basic cleansing.

Dryness of the skin begins to appear which means wrinkles are hard on its heels.  Pores are more enlarged.  Skin colours are less vibrant nor supple.  Capilliaries break out.

But having said that with proper care, we can delay the signs of aging.

Here are some of the basic skin care:

Hydration – ensure to drink lots of water; at least two litres a day.  Water flushes out the toxins.

Exercises – it has been found that regular exercises has some therapeutic effects on the body.  The more you exercise, the faster the skin heals itself.

Stop the Stress – Relax; stress makes the skin sag.  It gives you eye bags for starter.

No to Smoking – Next to the punishing effect of too much sun, smoking is aging to the skin.  Smoking can take away your healthy colour, leaving you rather gray.  It also gives premature aging along the mouth and lips; constant pursing of the lips to inhale and exhale a smoke can effect wrinkles.

Sleep – It is when one is asleep that the cells repair themselves.

And the most basic regimen is to CLEANSE, TONE AND MOISTURISE.

DID you know?

The ideal time to moisturise is after having a bath or taking a shower.  Moisturising damp skin ensure that the moistures are locked in.

More skin regimen:

Before you shower, dry brush your body, everywhere you can reach, which a coarse loofah to buff of dead cells and at the same time stimulate your circulation and aid lymphatic drainage.

Home-made Body Scrub

There is a very inexpensive way to smooth-en the body, you do not have to go to salon or buy expensive products when you can easily make your own at home and scent it with whatever scented oil you have got lurking in the back of your cupboard from last Christmas!

The ingredients for a good scrub are already in your food cupboard. 🙂

Body Scrub

Ingredients:

1 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp salt (if running low on salt, use granulated sugar)

3 drops of scented oil (lavander, grapefruit, bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood, citronella, jasmine, eucaliptus or any of your favourite)

Method of preparation:

Mix the olive oil with the salt or sugar.

Then add a few drops of any of the essential oils you have got in your cupboard or by the bath tub.

Mix it well.

Gently massage over your arms and legs this scented oily salt or sugar.  Give is a vigorous scrub all over before you  hit the shower.

Rinse off with warm water.

You will be left with a supple, soft, clean skin.

Do this once a week.

Toner is the second stage in facial care.  The first being cleansing and the third is moisturing.  

I have to admit, often I bypass this stage.  I cleanse and then slap on the moisturiser, in the morning and just before going to bed.

How important toning is?

Toning is that process that pick up all the residue of the day’s grime that somehow can’t be remove from cleansing.  Toning is buffing the face and neck clean.  It cleans and refreshes the pores which make them ready to receive all the goodness from a good rich moisturiser.

Toning is especially good to use in the morning.  It wakens up the skin and tighten the pores and give you an energised glow especially if the toner has been stored in the fridge.  It is calming, soothing and cooling.

Good Night Sleep

To carry care to bed is to sleep with a pack on your back.

Having too much on your mind doesn’t make for a good night rest.

New research found that the ideal amount of sleep one should have is between 6-8 hours per night.  More than 8 hours will only leave you feeling tired whilst less than 6 hours of sleep is not enough for your body cells to regenerate.

I read  from my Good Housekeeping magazine that to be able to attain that often so capricious good night sleep, one must find one’s personal sleep inducer.

warm glass of milk which can improve the quality of sleep

bed socks – if your extremities are cold.  (this one works for me when the weather is really cold and extra tip – moisturise your feet first and wake up with lovely pegs 😉 )

I have that holiday feeling right now, and I don’t mean Christmas or shopping for Christmas.

What I want is to get away and venture where there is sun, sea and cocktails, lots of it.

I can see myself just lying by the pool or by the beach with a mindless serial killer novel by Karin Slaughter 😉

It is so cold here in the UK, at the moment, and so cloudy.

Talking about travelling there are a few dos and don’ts to think about for a worry-less and fun holiday.

Here are my travel tips:

First thing first, the purse.  You can downside that wallet.  If you are going abroad, you will not need your nectar cards, you Tesco points card, your receipts of two years ago, your photo of your pet, etc.  Minimalise the purse.

Pack clothes that you can mix and match, ergo, you don’t have to take your whole wardrobe.  Also consider checking the weather in the host country for your holiday.  You might need to pack a cardigan for a chilly night or a raincoat for a sudden monsoon.

Always check the whereabouts of your passports and tickets, don’t leave it at the last minute especially at the airport.  You want to start your holiday stress-free not worrying where the heck are your documents.

Get a cross-over body bag.  This is so useful when you are out and about.  It frees  your hands for your water bottle and also it deters pickpockets (b*****ds).

You might want to pack a spare set of socks and knickers in your handbag.  Your luggage might go on a holiday of its own somewhere else.  It happens.

Don’t forget to do as the Romans do, meaning respect the culture and tradition of your host country.  Dress and behave respectfully at all times.  Do not litter or loiter! 😉

According to research a big pair of eyes are very attractive.

It has been said that the eyes are the windows to your soul.

They are the first thing people notice about you.

Therefore, we should look after our eyes.

*  We should carefully remove eye make-up before going to bed.

* Do not rub eyes with dirty tissues and dirty hands.

* Be gentle with the skin around the eyes.  Pat rather than rub!

* Get a good night sleep.

* Drink a lot of water to rehydrate the skin.

* Treat your eyes to some cold compress or cucumber slices session.

* Tidy up your eyebrows.  This technique can make you look younger.  Pluck any stray hairs around your eyebrows.  DO NOT OVER PLUCK!

* Invest in a pair of a good eyelash curler.  Curling your eyelashes really opens up your eyes.

* Try using false eyelashes.  They can become easy to use with practise.

* Using mascara is another trick.  Use black for drama.  Most make-up artists recommend to use mascara on upper lashes only.

DSCN9213Tears can be beneficial to your eyes.  They contain antibacterial substances which help clear most eye infections naturally.

Mint Milk Bath Recipe

Don’t you just want to be in Cleopatra’s shoes or rather in her bath tub, and bathe in her legendary milk wash?

Apparently Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of  Ancient Egypt had soft, silky and clear skin because of her daily milk bath ritual.

You would think that the milk came from some palace pampered bovine. Actually it came from 700 lactating donkeys.

As much as we would like to emulate the beautiful Cleopatra’s bathing regimen to the letter, it would be rather stressful to go looking for donkeys’ milk.

So let us improvise and make use of what is readily available – Cow’s milk.
Below is our recipe:

Mint Milk Bath Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups dried milk powder
3 tbsp crushed, bruised mint leaves
1 cup sea salt

Put the cornstarch, dried milk powder, mint leaves and sea salt in a large enough lidded jar.

Give it a long thorough mix to blend all the ingredients.

Now, just add a cup of this mixture to your running bath water. The rest can be kept in the jar for your next bathing time.

Now put on some music in the background, lie comfortably in your bath water and let all the stress from your daily grind to seep away, leaving you luscious soft skin. Let your inner Cleopatra reign!
