Agbayo (Life Size Mortar & Pestle)

The above photo was taken in Ferdinand Marcos’s Batac ancestral house.  It was used when he was obviously younger as the mortar shows sign of erosion or depreciation.

Having lived in a farming community when I was a young girl, this life-size mortar and pestle is a familiar sight.

It was used in many things that needed pulping like my favourite sweet rice dessert called nilupak or dehusking palay, especially when going to a rice mill is a bit of a hustle.

The term used by Ilocanos, people of Northern Luzon, is agbayo, which means to pound.

Rice comes from palay grains, and if you only wanted a chupa or a ganta of rice, most Ilocanos would probably use a pestle and mortar to pound the palay to dehusk and turn into rice which then ready to cook.

Pounding rice is sometimes more than just a chore.  It can be a way of bonding with friends and family.

I used to help my cousins when they were pounding in the mortar.  Usually there are extra pestles around and two or three people can pound together but take turn.  It is a matter of timing.  It was a lot of fun though can be hard work.  Having someone to help makes this arduous repetitive task less of a chore.

Toilet Queueing – Filipino Style

We were shopping at Tutuban Centre and Divisoria today, when we had to use the toilet.  Toilet in the Philippines is more popularly known as CR, short for Comfort Room.

Though there were plenty of women waiting for a vacant cubicle, like everyday anywhere else in the world, I noticed the queuing system is different from the process practised by the queue-loving people of the United Kingdom 🙂 , who hate queue jumpers and disorderly lines.

In the Philippines, the queue is not a single line like in the UK, where you don’t get to choose which toilet to go to but what is available after those ahead of you are finished.

Today, I noticed that you form a line in front of the toilet of your choice.

Without knowing this at first, I almost blurted out that I was there first and not to queue-jump.  Thankfully, I noticed what was happening immediately, otherwise I may have been lynched by bladder-bursting compatriots 🙂 🙂 🙂

Toilets at the Cultural Center of the Philippines was the most beautiful and cleanest I have been to in the Manila.

Combustible Cow Farts (Flatulence) Blows Up Cowshed!

Here is a story to hopefully make you smile and banish those Monday blues. 🙂

Most of us are aware that cows and other grazing cattle produce a lot of methane gas, a greenhouse gas and highly combustible too!

At a cowshed in Rasdorf, Germany 90 cows produced so much methane gas that it caught fire and blew up the shed

farting-cow

The gas had steadily built up in the structure and was ignited on Monday when ‘a static electric charge caused the gas to explode with flashes of flames,’ the police said in a statement.

It is estimated that cow made methane produced is 500 litres (liters) (about 132 gallons) a day. A large volume of methane, comparable to the pollution produced by a car in a day.

Luckily only one cow suffered minor injuries but the shed now needs a new roof 😉

Here's a stress management technique recommended in all the latest psychological journals. The funny thing is that it really does work and will make you smile.
1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out over a crystal clear stream.
2. Picture yourself with both your hands dangling in the cool running water.
3. Birds are sweetly singing in the cool mountain air.
4. No one knows your secret place.
5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world.
6. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.
7. The water is so clear that you can make out the face of the Congressman you are holding underwater.
See it worked. You're smiling. You feel better already.

Coffee Talks

coffee 2I read in The Independent that a research and survey were done amongst coffee drinkers.

It was found that there are more to  just drinking  coffee.  Your choice of coffee tells so much about you and your personality.

What does your coffee say about you? New study reveals personality traits of caffeine lovers

Cappuccino lovers are obsessive and latte drinkers are easy to please, according to Dr Ramani Durvasula

Friday 20 September 2013

A Harvard study suggests coffee could halve risk of suicide
Every morning in the UK caffeine lovers across the nation consume a staggering 70 million cups of coffee.

But aside from providing the oft needed early morning boost, the type of coffee a person likes to drink can also reveal a lot about their personality, according to a new study.

Clinical psychologist Dr Ramani Durvasula analysed 1,000 coffee lovers and examined common personality styles and psychological traits, looking specifically at introversion and extroversion, patience, perfectionism, warmth, vigilance, sensitivity and social boldness.

In her results, Dr Durvasula found that those with a penchant for black coffee are typically purist, no-nonsense individuals with a tendency to prefer the simple life, although they could also be abrupt, impatient and even averse to change.

In contrast, latte drinkers tended to be intent on pleasing others, but could also show slightly more neurotic attributes.

‘Perfectionist’ cappuccino drinkers are perhaps the most high-demand personality, with Dr Durvasula’s research finding them to be obsessive and controlling, overly sensitive, and health-conscious.

Instant coffee drinkers seemed to display more laid-back characteristics in the findings of her study however. Personality traits associated with this group included a predisposition to procrastinate and put off things that need doing.

Finally, those who preferred their coffee fix cold and sweet were considered socially bold ‘trend-setters’ who could be reckless on occasion.

Did you know?

Cafe au lait (coffee with milk) was a favourite of Marie Antoinette.

Honore Balzac would drink copious amount of coffee (about 34 cups) while on a 9 hours writing duty.  He preferred his coffee black, claiming that the addition of milk saddened the soul and weakened the nervous system.

Stork Held In Egypt On Suspicion Of Spying

Stork Held In Egypt On Suspicion Of SpyingStork Held In Egypt On Suspicion Of Spying

A stork has been detained by police in Egypt on suspicion of spying.

The bird was put behind bars after a man fishing in the Nile in Qena, some 280 miles south-east of Cairo, spotted an electronic device attached to its feathers.

Thinking it was an undercover agent, he captured the stork and took it to a police station near his home, said Mohammed Kamal, head of security in the Qena region.

Puzzled officers examined the bird, fearing the gadget was a bomb or spying equipment, and then called in veterinary experts.

Eventually, they discovered it was a wildlife tracker used by French scientists to follow the movement of migratory birds, said Ayman Abdallah, head of veterinary services in Qena.

He said the device stopped working when the bird crossed the French border, absolving it of being a spy.

But he said it would have to remain in police custody for the time being because officials need permission from state prosecutors to release the bird.

Commentators said that with turmoil gripping Egypt following the military coup that overthrew President Mohammad Morsi, authorities and citizens remain on high alert.

Earlier this year, a security guard filed a police report after capturing a pigeon he said was carrying microfilm.

In 2010, a series of shark attacks along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast were blamed on “GPS-controlled sharks” allegedly sent by Israeli security services into Sinai waters.

‘No Aliens On Earth’ Says Senior Obama Official

Sky News – Tue, Nov 8, 2011
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/no-aliens-earth-says-senior-obama-official-012017299.html

A senior White House official has insisted there is “no credible evidence of extraterrestrial presence here on Earth”.
And in a blow to millions of conspiracy theorists, the member of Barack Obama’s administration, also said there was no credible information to suggest evidence of alien life is being kept from the public.

The unusual comments were contained in a response by senior space policy and communications official Phil Larson to several petitions lodged on a White House website.

“The US government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race,” Mr Larson wrote.

“In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public’s eye.
“Many scientists and mathematicians have … come to the conclusion that the odds are pretty high that somewhere among the trillions and trillions of stars in the universe there is a planet other than ours that is home to life.

“Many have also noted, however, that the odds of us making contact with any of them – especially any intelligent ones – are extremely small, given the distances involved.

“But that’s all statistics and speculation. The fact is we have no credible evidence of extraterrestrial presence here on Earth.”

The statement was issued in response to two petitions, which a total of 17,000 signatures, calling on the Government to disclose knowledge of extraterrestrial beings and contact with them.

The White House has started a new initiative called “We the People” by allowing people to submit petitions to their government and pledged to respond to some that get a significant following.
